What are Subdomains?

Each domain, like seobook.com, has the ability to host additional subdomains off it, like tools.seobook.com and training.seobook.com.

Old Use of Subdomains

In the past abusing hundreds of subdomains was an easy way for authoritative sites like eBay to generate hundreds or thousands of similar pages that would rank in Google search results many times. In December of 2007 Google's Matt Cutts announced that Google is now treating subdomains similar to subfolders:
