Google powers around 70% of U.S. search (Google, AOL, Earthlink, Go, Netscape, and many others). In some markets, like the UK, Google has closer to a 90% market share.
Google shows up to ten pay-per-click AdWords ads on their search results, but they keep them separate from the regular (or organic) listings. Most of the PPC ads appear in the right rail, and Google may show 1 to 3 ads at the top of the search results if they get a high clickthrough rate. There is no direct way to pay Google money to list in their organic search results.
